The Supreme Court has upheld the election victory of Agbu Kefas as the Governor of Taraba State, dismissing the appeal lodged by Yahaya Sani of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) for being devoid of merit.
Sani, who contested the March 18, 2023, governorship election, had raised allegations of non-compliance with the Electoral Act, irregularities, and various malpractices. He sought the apex court’s intervention to set aside Kefas’ victory and declare him the rightful winner, arguing that he had secured the majority of lawful votes.
Earlier, the Court of Appeal in Abuja had already dismissed Sani’s appeal in November, concurring with the Tribunal’s earlier decision that affirmed Kefas’ election. The Tribunal had reached its decision on September 30, 2023.
Agbu Kefas emerged victorious in the gubernatorial race by polling 257,926 votes, while Yahaya Sani secured 202,277 votes. The Supreme Court, echoing the decisions of the lower courts, declared the NNPP’s appeal lacking in merit and consequently upheld Kefas’ election.
The apex court’s ruling solidifies Kefas’ mandate and puts an end to the legal challenges that have surrounded the Taraba State gubernatorial election. The unanimous decisions across all levels of the judiciary affirm the credibility of the electoral process and validate the people’s choice as expressed through the ballot box.
Governor Agbu Kefas, in response to the court’s decision, expressed gratitude for the judiciary’s impartiality and commitment to upholding the rule of law. He reiterated his dedication to serving the people of Taraba State and advancing the development agenda for the betterment of the citizens.
