Putin wins fifth term as Russia’s president

The president proposed a constitutional amendment that increased Russia's presidential term from four to six years.

President Vladimir Putin has won the 2024 Russian presidential election by a landslide.

According to Reuters, exit polls show Putin leading with 88% of the vote over Communist Party candidate Nikolai Kharitonov, who trails with 4%.

The New People’s Party candidate, Vladislav Davankov, received 3.85 per cent of the vote, while Leonid Slutsky of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) received only 3.1 per cent.

Putin, who has been in power since 2000, is expected to secure another six-year term, making him Russia’s longest-serving leader in more than 200 years.

After his second term ended in 2008, he was prime minister for another four years before being elected president again in 2012.
