In Yenagoa, a Bayelsa State High Court delivered a verdict on Wednesday, sentencing Erenyanate Wealth Godday to 10 years in prison for the illegal possession of firearms.
The 32-year-old, hailing from Nembe-Bassambiri in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was apprehended in connection with an armed robbery at the Kimiowei Filling Station, a drive-in petrol station/bar in the Amarata area of the state capital, which occurred on April 11, 2023.
The police prosecution team informed the court that the convict was taken into custody at his residence on Imgbi Road on April 28, 2023, by the Anti-Kidnapping unit of the State Police Command.
According to the charge sheet, a search conducted at his residence led to the discovery of a locally crafted English Berretta pistol containing 3 rounds of 9mm ammunition, resulting in the arrest for unlawful possession of firearms.
After considering the arguments presented by both the prosecuting and defense counsels, Justice Mike Ikabe of Court 13, who presided over the case, imposed a 10-year prison sentence on Godday.
