The federal government of Nigeria has officially declared Wednesday, September 27, 2023, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who extended his congratulations to all Muslims, both within Nigeria and in the Diaspora, for the opportunity to observe this significant occasion.
In a statement released by the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Oluwatoyin Akinlade, on Monday, Minister Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to embrace the values of love, patience, tolerance, and perseverance. These virtues, he emphasized, are deeply rooted in the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and are essential for fostering peace, security, and harmony within the nation.
He further called upon Nigerians to adopt principles of hard work and a peaceful disposition towards fellow human beings, regardless of differences in faith, ideology, social class, or ethnicity. Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of unity and encouraged citizens to join hands with the administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He stressed the administration’s commitment to building a progressive and esteemed nation that all citizens can take pride in.
In conclusion, Minister Tunji-Ojo extended warm wishes for a joyful celebration to all Muslim faithful as they observe Eid-ul-Mawlid.
The declaration of a public holiday for this significant religious celebration underscores the federal government’s commitment to recognizing and respecting the diverse religious traditions of its citizens while promoting values of peace, unity, and tolerance across the nation.
