The Department of State Security (DSS) has denied reports that it has arrested any former or current Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) official.
DSS made the announcement in a post on its X account on Thursday.
According to some social media reports, Aishah Ahmad, the former CBN deputy governor in charge of financial system stability, was arrested.
It stated that Ahmad was detained by the DSS for the alleged fraudulent acquisition of shares. The reports said she fraudulently acquired shares in Polaris Bank, Titan Bank/Union Bank and that Titan Bank raised $300 million to complete the acquisition of Union Bank.
In response to the claim, the DSS stated that it had not:
“Arrested any former or present official of the CBN” in the previous 48 hours.
Recall that all deputy governors who worked with former CBN chief Godwin Emefiele resigned in September 2023. The deputy governors are Ahmad, Folashodun Shonubi, Edward Lametek Adamu, and Kingsley Obiora.
President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele in June. He instructed him to delegate his responsibilities to Shonubi.
The DSS later stated that Emefiele was being held for “investigative purposes.”
In September of last year, Tinubu nominated Yemi Cardoso to succeed Shonubi as governor of the apex bank.
He also announced the appointment of four new deputy governors. They are Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Phillip Ikeazor, and Bala M. Bello.
