Three years following the passing of 12-year-old student Sylvester Junior Oromoni from Dowen College, Lekki, a Coroner Inquest held in Ogba Magistrate Court has attributed his demise to negligence on the part of his parents and doctor.
Coroner Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri determined that Oromoni’s death resulted from inadequate treatment of his enlarged liver. Oromoni’s passing on November 30, 2021, had initially been linked to bullying and alleged ingestion of a poisonous substance while at school.
Reports indicated Oromoni had mentioned being assaulted by five senior students of Dowen College: Favour Benjamin (16), Edward Begue (16), Ansel Temile (14), Kenneth Inyang, and Michael Kashamu (16), son of late Senator Buruji Kashamu.
The incident led to the indefinite closure of the school despite denying the claim.
The school insisted that the boy complained of leg pain following an injury he sustained while playing football.
Subsequently, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police ordered a comprehensive investigation, leading to the exoneration on January 5, 2022, of the five students and five Dowen College employees implicated in Oromoni’s demise.
Two years later, Oromoni was laid to rest at his family’s compound in Ogbe-Ijoh, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta.
Kadiri emphasized, “It is evident that the deceased’s health deteriorated under the care of (doctor) PW 3. PW 3 neglected the deceased for over 32 hours, resulting in an avoidable demise on November 30, 2021. The negligence of the parents and PW 3 deprived the deceased of necessary medical attention, subjecting him to unnecessary suffering.”
