82 Nigerians awarded UK Chevening, Commonwealth scholarships

The British Government has awarded prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to 82 Nigerian students for the 2024 academic year.

These scholarships will enable recipients to pursue master’s and PhD programmes in the United Kingdom.

This was according to a statement from the British High Commission, Abuja on Friday by the Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer, Atinuke Akande-Alegbe.

This year, 32 Nigerians were selected for the Chevening scholarships, while 50 were awarded the Commonwealth scholarships.
“The British Government has awarded 82 Nigerians, the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to study a wide range of master’s degrees and PhD programmes in the UK in 2024.

“This year, 32 scholars received the Chevening scholarships, and 50 scholars have been awarded the Commonwealth scholarship so far,” the statement read in part.

The selection process, renowned for its competitiveness, culminated in a pre-departure ceremony held on Thursday in Abuja for scholars from the capital and surrounding regions.
A similar ceremony will take place next week in Lagos, where the Deputy Head of Mission, Abby Bernard, will host scholars from Lagos and nearby cities.
During the Abuja event, British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, congratulated the scholars and stressed the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s educational development.

“The UK continues to support the educational development of Nigerians and remain transparent and inclusive in the selection process across board,” she stated.

She also encouraged the recipients to excel in their studies, serve as outstanding ambassadors for Nigeria, and leverage their experiences abroad to drive positive change upon their return.

The Director of Operations at the British Council Nigeria, Idowu Akintade also urged the scholars to build strong networks and use their newfound knowledge to contribute to Nigeria’s development priorities.

“We hope the skills and knowledge you gain from this scholarship opportunity prepares you to make positive impact in the development priorities of Nigeria.

“I encourage you all to build a strong network and continue to be great ambassadors of the prestigious Commonwealth and Chevening Scholarships,” he noted.
Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to individuals who demonstrate intellectual ability, leadership potential and a commitment to development of their home country.

According to the commission, Nigeria has a huge alumni base with over 4500 (3000 Commonwealth and 1500 Chevening) alumni across both scholarships with very prestigious people impacting and contributing to Nigeria’s development.
