A XeJet Airlines plane went off the runway at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport Terminal Two (MMA2) on Saturday.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) verified the event in a statement released on Saturday.
According to the bureau, the aircraft departed Abuja and skidded off runway 18L upon landing in Lagos, coming to a standstill on “the grass verge.”
According to the agency, the ill-fated aeroplane, call sign 5NBZZ, carried around 52 passengers.
The statement reads:
“NSIB confirms that an aircraft belonging to Xejet Airlines skidded off the runway at the domestic wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport this morning. A go team has been deployed to the site of the incident.”
“Fire and Rescue on the ground to help evacuate the passengers.”
The agency stated the runway is currently blocked from traffic.
On September 1, 2023, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) suspended XeJet’s air operator certificate (AOC) and air transport licence (AOL) due to the airline’s “inability to authenticate” its insurance documents.
According to the authorities, the suspension occurred due to the National Insurance Commission’s (NAICOM) inability to verify the legitimacy of the aircraft insurance paperwork.
