Uju Kennedy, Minister of Women Affairs, has condemned a woman’s husband’s domestic abuse in Akwa Ibom.
In the five-minute video, a man identified as Ekere Ebong, a lawyer, is seen beating his wife, who begins coughing blood from her mouth.
The woman was seen crying and pleading with her husband to stop beating her while wearing only a vest and pants.
Her neighbours rescued her and confronted her husband, pleading with him to stop abusing her.
According to one of the neighbours, the lawyer has been beating the woman for the past four years.
Neighbours gave the woman a wrapper, but the man locked her out of the house, saying, “If she is a woman, let her sleep there.”
The police have since arrested Ebong.
Uju described the clip as the “most insane and unbelievable scenes of brutalisation” in a previous post on X (Twitter).
She promised that the case would be handled by the law and that the lawyer would be punished.
She said:
“This remains one of the most insane and unbelievable scenes one has seen in the brutalization of women”.
“As I have always emphasised, this is a ‘Renewed Hope’ government and such an act cannot be allowed in our country.
“On that note, the federal Ministry of women affairs has ordered the arrest of this demonized lawyer Mr Ebong, who must face the law squarely and I promise this act cannot be swept under the carpet.
“Even if the woman decides she doesn’t want her husband to be sued, due to family pressure, the man must face the law as justice will have its way.”
