We’ve uncovered plot to mobilise youths for violent protests - DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) claims to have uncovered plans to stage violent protests to discredit the federal government and security agencies over “various socioeconomic issues.”

Student leaders, youths, ethnic-based associations, and disgruntled groups are being mobilized for the protests, according to the security agency.

The DSS stated that the “ring leaders of the plot” have been identified and are being monitored.

According to intelligence reports, those masterminding the violent protests include politicians. DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya said this in a statement issued on Monday.

Afunanya stated that the “masterminds” would be prevented from “throwing the country into anarchy.”

The service advised university vice-chancellors and tertiary institution heads to discourage their students from engaging in acts that could destabilise public order.

“Also, parents and guardians are enjoined to admonish their children and wards respectively. They should also shun the lure of participating in inimical behaviours or conduct against law and order,” Afunanya said.

The DSS warned those “desirous” of undermining national security to backtrack.

The DSS revelation comes on the heels of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s planned two-day strike. The strike is set to begin on Tuesday.

The planned strike by the labour union is to protest the impact of the removal of petrol subsidies on the general public.
