US court dismisses Atiku’s suit over Tinubu’s academic records

Atiku maintained that Tinubu's academic records were forged.

A US court has thrown out a lawsuit filed by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

In the suit, Atiku sought the academic records of President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu had claimed to hold a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Chicago State University.

Beverly Poindexter, the staff responsible for transcript requests and degree verification, confirmed in January 2023 that Tinubu attended the university between 1977 and 1979.

However, Atiku, the presidential candidate of PDP in the 2023 elections, maintained that Tinubu’s academic records were forged.

Recently, Atiku filed a suit to subpoena the university to produce Tinubu’s academic records.

The documents sought included details of Tinubu’s admission, acceptance, dates of attendance, degrees and awards. He also sought honours attained during his time at the university.

However, before the hearing date, Atiku withdrew the lawsuit.

On July 31, Patrick Heneghan, the presiding judge at the circuit court of Cook County, Illinois, dismissed the case following the withdrawal by Atiku.

“Petitioner’s subpoena in this case is withdrawn and thus Chicago State University will not be deposed pursuant to the subpoena in this case,” the judge held.

“The case is dismissed without prejudice and resolves all matters pending before the court.”
