UNILAG students stage another protest over tuition hike

They criticized the fee hike for its lack of consideration for students' well-being and called on the Federal Government to allocate the funds generated from subsidy removal to education rather than permitting fee increases.

Students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against the increase in tuition fees at their institution.

This marks the second protest within a week by UNILAG students, who have been joined by peers from other universities.

The protesters marched with chants emphasizing the need for a reduction in the school fees.

Accompanied by officers from the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), students voiced their determination to continue protesting until the school fees are reverted to their previous rates.

They criticized the fee hike for its lack of consideration for students’ well-being and called on the Federal Government to allocate the funds generated from subsidy removal to education rather than permitting fee increases.

In July, UNILAG authorities had announced a tuition fee hike for both new and returning undergraduate students, citing the “prevailing economic realities” as the reason behind the decision.
