The University of Lagos campus saw a significant deployment of security operatives at its main gate this Wednesday morning as students prepared to stage a protest against a recent tuition fee increase.
A combination of officers from the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Police Force, and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were strategically positioned at the main entrance to thwart the planned demonstration.
As of 9:42 a.m. local Nigerian time, students were being denied entry onto the campus premises, with some of them congregating around the locked gate in anticipation of the unfolding situation.
One student of the University of Lagos, who wished to remain anonymous, reported to Channels Television that their efforts to gather and commence the protest were met with the use of teargas by security forces earlier in the morning.
The protest was organized in response to the recent announcement of tuition fee hikes, which students find burdensome. It remains to be seen how this situation will evolve and whether the students’ grievances will be addressed through dialogue or further demonstrations.
