The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has taken action by suspending Cyril Ndifon, the dean of the faculty of law, who has been accused of sexual harassment.
The suspension of Ndifon was communicated through a letter signed by the university’s registrar, Gabriel Egbe, on Thursday.
Earlier, female students, led by Benedict Otu, the president of the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), had organized a protest demanding the removal of Ndifon.
During the protest, students carried placards with strong messages, including allegations against Ndifon for inappropriate behaviour and misuse of power.
In response to the allegations, the university authorities initiated an investigation into the matter.
Ndifon’s suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of the investigation and will be effective from August 17, 2023.
“Please refer to our letter Ref UC/REG/DISC.45A dated August 14, 2023, on your alleged violation of the provisions of the extant laws and policies of the University and your response to the said letter which was dated 16th August, 2023,” the letter reads in part.
The university’s letter explained that Ndifon’s suspension was prompted by his response to a query from the university’s management.
As part of the suspension, Ndifon was instructed to hand over all university property under his possession, relinquish his official duties, and vacate his office.
Furthermore, he was directed to refrain from being on the university premises except when required to appear before the investigation panel.
