NJC refutes alleged resignation of presidential tribunal judge

The presidential election petition court has accepted a certified true copy of Vice-President Kashim Shettima’s voluntary resignation letter as evidence.

Wole Olanipekun, the lawyer representing President Bola Tinubu and Shettima, presented the letter dated July 6, 2022.

The defence team submitted the letter at the commencement of their case in response to the petition filed by Peter Obi and the Labour Party (LP).

Obi and LP contest the outcome of the February 25 presidential election and raise concerns about Shettima’s dual nominations.

However, the respondents argue that Shettima renounced his senatorial candidacy before accepting the vice-presidential nomination from his party.

Meanwhile, Tinubu and Shettima have accused Obi of not being a registered member of the LP during the presidential election.

To support their claim, the president and vice-president presented a copy of the LP membership register for Anambra state.

The respondents’ lawyer exhibited the document together with LP’s letter, dated April 25, 2022.

This letter was sent to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide the membership register.
