President Bola Tinubu has urged security and law enforcement agencies to step up efforts to battle cybercriminals and transnational vehicle thieves operating in the country.

The president‘s directive builds on the government’s resolve to combat organised crime networks that engage in illegal activities, particularly those targeting foreign nationals.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special assistant on information and strategy, Tinubu praised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its recent work with Canadian authorities.

This collaboration resulted in the seizure of $180,000 and 53 automobiles, which were turned over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on behalf of two citizens of the country.

The president acknowledged the significance of this cooperation and called for sustained efforts in tackling transnational crimes.

Tinubu said:

“Nigeria is not a destination for stolen vehicles and a haven for illicit wealth from foreign countries.”

He stressed that his administration will not relent in combating financial crimes, cybercrime, and money laundering.

He emphasised that the most efficient method to weaken organised crime is to deprive criminals of the profits from their illicit operations.

The president was also concerned about the role of transnational organised crime groups in the illegal export of stolen vehicles into Nigeria.

He asked law enforcement authorities, including the EFCC, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), to increase their vigilance and collaborate to disrupt these illicit networks.

He stated that seized and confiscated assets, particularly transportable property like vehicles, should be retained for the benefit of the state, society, and victims in compliance with existing legislation and international conventions.

“Criminals must not benefit from their illicit activities,” Tinubu said, adding that Nigeria is committed to maintaining strong relationships with international partners to ensure that criminals who operate across borders are brought to justice.
