Alexander Okoh, director-general and CEO of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has been fired by President Bola Tinubu.
Okoh was fired on Monday, according to Ajuri Ngelale, special adviser to the president for media and publicity.
Tinubu, according to Ngelale, also fired Babatunde Irukera, executive vice chairman and CEO of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
Irukera was appointed DG of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) in April 2017. After, he became the EVC after the CPC was merged with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission in December 2019.
Ngelale stated that Okoh and Irukera were fired as part of plans to restructure and reposition critical federal government agencies to protect the rights of Nigerian consumers.
He stated that their dismissal is also in line with plans to provide a solid foundation for increased contributions to the national economy by key growth-enabling institutions.
Ngelale said:
“The two dismissed Chief Executives are directed to hand over to the next most senior officer in their respective agencies, pending the appointment of new Chief Executive Officers.”
Commenting on his dismissal, Irukera said he is grateful for the “opportunity to have served the incredibly vibrant & loyal Nigerian citizens/consumers”.
He said:
“They deserve a better deal. I leave behind a strong Institutional advocate in the FCCPC, & an outstanding team of soldiers who work there daily for the cause of fair markets.”
Ngelale said Okoh and Irukera’s sack took effect immediately.
