In response to the recent fuel subsidy removal, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has initiated the distribution of palliatives aimed at alleviating the economic hardships faced by the state’s residents. The first phase of this initiative saw the distribution of over 3,000 bags of 50 kg rice to political wards, with a further 12,600 bags being distributed in the second phase.
The distribution was officially launched at the Micheal Okwara Auditorium in Umuahia, the state capital. During the event, Governor Otti emphasized that these food relief packages were exclusively intended for the poorest individuals in the state. He made it clear that no government appointees would be recipients of these aid packages.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Otti, the Special Adviser on Policies and Interventions, Rev. Fr. Christian Uche Anokwuru, stated that these palliatives were a display of empathy towards the people of Abia State. He also highlighted that the government was actively working on more sustainable initiatives, which would be rolled out in phases to further support the state’s residents during these challenging times.
The distribution of these palliatives has garnered praise from beneficiaries and the community alike. Samuel Maduabuchi, one of the beneficiaries, expressed his appreciation for the gesture and urged other political leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, to consider similar initiatives to support the Nigerian population during this period of economic transition.
Governor Otti’s proactive response to the fuel subsidy removal demonstrates his commitment to the welfare of Abia State’s residents, particularly those who are most vulnerable. As the distribution of palliatives continues, it is expected to provide much-needed relief to those affected by the recent policy changes.
