Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has claimed that some current government officials should be in jail for past misdemeanors and criminal misconduct.
Obasanjo made this statement on Thursday while delivering a virtual address at the Denis Joseph Slattery Memorial Lecture in Lagos.
According to him, government officials with “questionable” integrity are incapable of making decisions that will benefit Nigerians.
In his speech, titled “The Imperative for Moral Rectitude in Governance,” Obasanjo emphasized that the most critical requirement for anyone in governance is “accountability.”
He stated, “If you critically examine the individuals in government today, both in the executive and legislative branches, some of them should be permanently behind bars for their past misdemeanors and criminal misconduct. You cannot expect thieves to deliver just judgment in favor of the rightful owners of property.”
