President Bola Tinubu has strongly condemned the killing of 16 Nigerian soldiers, including a commanding officer and other senior ranks, who were ambushed while on a peacekeeping mission to the Okuoma community in Delta State.
In a statement released on Sunday, Tinubu asserted, “We will not accept this wicked act.” The tragic incident unfolded on Thursday when troops, responding to a crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities, came under attack by unidentified assailants.
Tinubu characterized the ambush, which claimed the lives of soldiers including two Majors, one Captain, and 12 other troops, along with one civilian, as “a direct assault on our nation.” He lauded the fallen soldiers for their “heroism, courage, uncommon grit, and patriotism.”
Promising that the perpetrators of this cowardly act would face justice, the President affirmed, “Any assault on our armed forces is an assault on our nation.” He disclosed that the military high command was already taking action, with the Defence Headquarters granted full authority to ensure accountability.
“We will not stand for such heinous acts,” Tinubu reiterated, emphasizing his government’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace across Nigeria.
“My government will not relent until we achieve peace and tranquility in every part of Nigeria.”
The President joined all Nigerians in mourning the deaths, extending profound condolences to the families and colleagues of the fallen.
He stated that the soldiers have “joined the pantheon of great men and women who gave their all, with honor, in the service of our fatherland.”
