Shettima attended "several bilateral meetings and numerous sideline events at the general assembly".

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after attending the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.

Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the event and delivered Nigeria’s national statement during the general debate.

While delivering Nigeria’s declaration, Tinubu requested debt forgiveness for the country.

He said:

“Similarly, we must ensure that any reform of the international financial system includes comprehensive debt relief measures, to enable sustainable financing for development.”

“Countries of the global South cannot make meaningful economic progress without special concessions and a review of their current debt burden.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, Stanley Nkwocha, the vice president’s spokesperson, said Shettima attended “several bilateral meetings and numerous sideline events at the general assembly”.

Nkwocha said:

“He will proceed to join President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to mark some events put together as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.”
