Senegal’s newly inaugurated President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has appointed Ousmane Sonko as prime minister. Sonko, a prominent opponent of former President Macky Sall, has long been a symbol of youth empowerment in the country.
Despite being barred from the recent presidential election due to a defamation conviction, Sonko remained influential and rallied support for Faye under the slogan “Diomaye is Sonko.” Faye secured victory in the election with 54% of the vote in the first round.
In response to his appointment, Sonko expressed his determination to fully support Faye’s presidency.
Sonko affirmed his intention to present a comprehensive list of proposed ministerial appointments for Faye’s approval, emphasizing his dedication to working closely with the president to address the nation’s challenges and fulfill their promises to the Senegalese people.
