The Senate has given its confidence to the country’s service and security chiefs.
According to TheCable, this followed an eight-hour meeting with service chiefs and security heads held behind closed doors in the red chamber on Tuesday.
The meeting began in the afternoon and ended around 9:00 p.m.
The security chiefs present included Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff; Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff; Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff; and Hassan Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff.
Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA), Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), and Yusuf Bichi, director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS), were among the security officials present.
Reading a communique at the end of the meeting, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the federal government should put in place a unified system of identification.
Akpabio said:
“We commend the security chiefs and particularly point out that the interior minister should use a unified identification system. That will be a better thing for Nigerians.”
“For the security chiefs, we assure them of the support of the senate and the national assembly.
“We passed a vote of confidence on the service chiefs.”
Yemi Adaramodu, the senate spokesperson, also told reporters that the security chiefs had handled the country’s security situation well.
Adaramodu said:
“Look at what they are doing in Ekiti and Plateau also.”
“The problem is that the attacks happened sporadically. That’s why we asked them where we can come in.
“The minister of finance has assured us of adequate funding.”
