The Senate has postponed the questioning of service chiefs regarding the nation’s security challenges to February 13, 2024, to allow for the inclusion of additional stakeholders involved in security management, Channels TV reports.
Initially scheduled for today, the briefing by security chiefs at the Senate chamber was rescheduled to accommodate a wider array of participants in addressing the rising insecurity across the country.
The motion to adjourn the security briefing was proposed by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro. Senate President Godswill Akpabio approved the decision, emphasizing the Senate’s desire for a comprehensive discussion on insecurity.
The expanded invitees list, directed by the Senate President, includes all Service Chiefs, the National Security Adviser, Finance Minister, Interior Minister, Defence Minister, Minister of State for Defence, and the Minister of Police Affairs.
The Senate’s decision to summon the service chiefs follows an emergency session held on January 30, during which concerns over the escalating insecurity in the nation prompted unanimous agreement to address the matter directly.
Present at the scheduled briefing were Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
