Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been confirmed as the duly elected Lagos state governor by the Supreme Court.
The appeal filed by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s (LP) governorship candidate in the 2023 election, was dismissed by a five-member panel of the Supreme Court.
In the main issue for determination, Rhodes-Vivour argued that Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor of Lagos, was ineligible to be sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC) because he had renounced his Nigerian citizenship and taken up US citizenship.
The court, however, determined that there is no credible evidence that the deputy governor renounced his Nigerian citizenship.
It ruled that no provision in the constitution deprives a citizen by birth of his citizenship, even if he takes up the citizenship of another country.
The court ruled that Rhodes-Vivour was required to provide the renunciation register in the prescribed manner, as alleged by the deputy governor.
As a result, the court ruled that the appeal was an abuse of the court system and without merit.
The Supreme Court also dismissed the appeal filed by Abdulazeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the election.
The court ruled that the issue was pre-election and should not have been brought before the tribunal.
