S’Court affirms Alia’s election as Benue gov

It also ruled that Uba had failed to prove Ode's forgery allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Supreme Court has upheld Hycinth Alia’s election as governor of Benue State.

According to Vanguard, Titus Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost his appeal before the Supreme Court.

Uba had challenged Alia’s All Progressives Congress (APC) victory.

Following INEC’s declaration of Alia as the winner of the March 18 governorship election, the Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed Alia’s election as Benue governor.

Because it was a pre-election matter, the Court of Appeal said it lacked jurisdiction to hear the petition.

The court ruled that Uba should have taken the forgery charge against the deputy governor, Sam Ode, to the Supreme Court.

It also ruled that Uba had failed to prove Ode’s forgery allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.

On Monday, the PDP candidate took the case to the Supreme Court, which dismissed his appeal and upheld Alia’s election.

Alia, a first-time governorship candidate, deposed the PDP in Benue.

Alia took over for PDP governor Samuel Ortom, who served for eight years.
