Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has died.
Akeredolu died on Wednesday morning at the age of 67, according to Punch.
The governor was reported to have died of leukaemia and prostate cancer.
Akeredolu returned to Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, on September 7 after a three-month medical leave in Germany.
The return of Akeredolu, his remote working conditions, and his initial refusal to hand over power to Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the state’s deputy governor, sparked a political crisis in the state.
There were allegations that the governor’s signature was being forged in the course of government business by his loyalists.
President Bola Tinubu entered the political crisis on November 24.
Following that, the impeachment proceedings against Aiyedatiwa were dropped.
On December 12, the governor announced that he would be taking another medical leave as a result of his treatment and turned over power to Aiyedatiwa.
“In the absence of Governor Akeredolu, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, will assume the responsibilities of the Governor in acting capacity,” Richard Olatunde, chief press secretary to the governor, said in a statement.
On December 13, the Ondo House of Assembly finally declared Aiyedatiwa acting governor.
Akeredolu was elected governor for the first time in 2016 and was re-elected in 2020. His term ends in 2024.
