Resident doctors at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) in Ondo State have initiated a 14-day warning strike, citing various grievances, including the non-payment of seven months’ salaries to new members, ChannelsTV reports.
Under the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) umbrella, the doctors highlighted several issues prompting their industrial action during a protest, including the failure to pay palliative to House Officers since February and the non-disbursement of February Hazard Allowance despite assurances from the state government.
John Matthew, the association’s President, addressed reporters during the demonstration, outlining the reasons for the warning strike. He emphasized the dire consequences of the staff shortage, revealing that the hospital’s resident doctors had dwindled from 150 to only 26 in recent months.
“We demand full payment of the arrears of salaries owed to our members and payment of the February 2024 palliative to our house officers,” Matthew asserted.
“Management should pay the February hazard allowance to our members and urgently address the severe clinical manpower shortage in the institution.”
