The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has revived the worldwide issue of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) using a “secure and user-friendly” portal available at possap.gov.ng.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, explained in a statement that the measure is in reaction to extensive public complaints about driver harassment due to the usage of tinted windows.
He stated that the endeavour underlines the need for a clear, transparent, and accountable approach for regulating factory-installed tinted glass on vehicles.
“With modern automobiles increasingly manufactured with tinted windows it has become essential to provide a standardised system that accommodates legitimate use while ensuring public safety,” the statement reads.
“Vehicles have often been exploited for criminal purposes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, ‘one-chance’ scams, and other forms of banditry. Their use hampers police visibility and impedes effective law enforcement, thereby contributing to public insecurity.”
Adejobi stated that the reactivation of the permit system is a deliberate move to identify authorised users, such as those with medical needs or members of the security community, while preventing usage for criminal purposes.
He stated that it is likely to improve police investigation capacity and strengthen national security measures.
The police spokeswoman stated that applicants can now submit their permits online, with identification verification integrated via the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), as well as biometric capture and background checks.
He added that the system includes QR-coded digital permits and has a 72-hour processing time.
The spokesperson stated that a 30-day grace period has been allowed, beginning May 1, during which motorists are expected to comply with the new laws.
Adejobi added that enforcement will resume at the end of this period, adding that officers found indulging in unprofessional conduct such as extortion or harassment in the course of enforcement, will be firmly dealt with in accordance with existent disciplinary procedures.
In June 2021, Usman Baba, former inspector-general of police (IGP), ordered the suspension of the issue of permits for tinted glasses and SPY number plates.
Last year, the police announced the reintroduction of tinted glass permits for vehicles in the country.
