Police prosecute reps member Ikwechegh over alleged assault of driver

Federal lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh was arraigned today at the Kuje Magistrate Court on charges of assaulting Steven Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, in an incident that sparked public outrage.

Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South in the House of Representatives, faced a three-count charge on Wednesday, including assault and threat to life.

Police Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the development, stating that the investigation and prosecution were managed by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU).

“In response to a case of assault on a bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, by Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, on the night of October 27 2024, the Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Unit and the Legal Section have concluded investigations into the case and today arraigned Hon. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh on the charges of “Abuse of Office, Criminal Intimidation and Criminal Force and Assault Contrary to Sections 397(b) and 265 of the Penal Code Act at the Kuje Magistrate Court,” the statement read.

The incident, in a viral video on X, shows Ikwechegh allegedly striking Abuwatseya multiple times while issuing threats to “make him disappear,” using his position to intimidate the driver.

The Force spokesman explained that the “Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, had ordered a proper investigation into the matter to ensure that justice is served and promoting human respect and dignity in Nigeria.”
