Police arrest two in Lagos for allegedly selling newborn twins

The suspects disclosed that the mother of the newborn twins sold the babies as she was unable to provide proper care for them.

Police operatives in Lagos State have arrested two individuals for allegedly attempting to sell newborn twins.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the suspects were apprehended in the Berger area after a “Good Samaritan” alerted officers from the Ojodu Division.

“The suspects were found with two newborn baby girls, approximately six days old, while traveling from Abia State on September 9, 2024,” Hundeyin said in a statement released on Friday.

According to police investigations, the suspects were en route to deliver the infants to a nurse in Lagos, whom the mother had arranged to meet once they arrived in the state.

During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, revealing that they had been paid ₦150,000 for transporting the babies to Lagos. They also disclosed that the mother sold the babies as she was unable to provide proper care for them.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices involved in the case, while the arrested suspects were arraigned on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

The case has been transferred to the Command’s Gender Unit, and the newborns have been placed in the care of a motherless babies’ home for proper care and medical evaluation,” the spokesperson added.
