Police arrest suspects, recover two vessels in crackdown on oil theft

The Nigeria Police Force has intensified its efforts to combat illegal oil theft and economic sabotage in the country, resulting in the arrest of forty individuals and the recovery of two vessels. The operation, in collaboration with military and private security contractors, targeted illegal activities at the Ogbogoro Oil Field, Brass Area, and Ekeni Area of Southern-Ijaw in Bayelsa State.

The suspects were apprehended for various offenses, including conspiracy, tampering with oil pipelines, illegal transportation of crude oil, and storing crude oil without lawful authority. They will face charges related to economic sabotage and oil theft.

Arraignments for the suspects are scheduled, with one vessel’s case set for February 26th, 2024, and a motion for interim forfeiture of the vessel and its products to be heard on February 19th, 2024.

The Inspector-General of Police urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities related to oil theft. The police are committed to improving synergy with other relevant stakeholders to end illegal oil activities, emphasizing their determination to bring perpetrators to justice.

Preliminary investigations have implicated several individuals and companies, including foreign collaborators, who will be interrogated and prosecuted accordingly.
