The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended Ekere Ebong, a lawyer, following a viral video depicting him brutally assaulting his wife in their Uyo residence. The video, widely circulated on social media, shows the victim lying on the ground with visible injuries, pleading for the violence to cease.*
Neighbours intervened to rescue the battered woman, with one stating that the lawyer had been subjecting his wife to regular beatings for nearly four years. Outrage on social media prompted calls for Ebong’s arrest.*
In an official statement released on Monday, Odiko Macdon, the spokesperson for the Akwa Ibom police, revealed that Ebong is a “known habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his wife over the years.” Macdon emphasized that the suspect would face charges in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
“As an agency saddled with the protection of lives and property and maintenance of law and order, we cannot allow Barrister Ebong to continue this flagrant abuse of human rights, hence, the commissioner of police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi ordered the arrest of the suspect to prevent murder and breakdown of law and order,” the police spokesperson stated.
CP Durosinmi warned against violent crimes in the state, urging individuals to resolve disputes amicably rather than resorting to physical attacks. The arrest of Ekere Ebong underscores the commitment of law enforcement to address domestic violence and protect the rights of individuals.
