Police apprehend Abuja man who climbed mast to protest economic hardship

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has apprehended Shaibu Yusuf.

Yusuf caused a sensation on Monday when he climbed Aso Radio and Television’s broadcast pole to protest the country’s economic suffering.

In a note left on the floor, Yusuf stated that he would only be down from the mast if economic hardship, instability, and the out-of-school children crisis were addressed.

He eventually descended after several minutes of persuading from Florence Wenegieme, acting general manager of the FCT emergency management department, who assured him that his message would be forwarded to the FCTA, the president, and the federal government.

Josephine Adeh, the police command’s spokesperson, said Yusuf was in police custody and in “stable condition” in a statement on Monday.

According to Section 327 of the Criminal Code, attempting suicide in Nigeria is a misdemeanour punishable by up to a year in prison.

The statement reads:

“Following a distress call from concerned citizens about a young man who climbed a very high mast with a placard at Aso Radio in Katampe at about 09:10 a.m, the operatives of the FCT Police Command swiftly mobilized to the location.”

“With much professional persuasion from the police operatives, the man later identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau was prevented from taking his own life.

“He claimed to have been observing the mast for about a week before deciding to climb it. The suspect is presently in police custody and a stable condition.”
