The Nigeria Police Force has addressed the rising insecurity in Plateau State by setting up a Special Operation Squad, as revealed by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun during a visit to the Government House in Jos. The move is part of a broader intervention strategy to curb the incessant attacks plaguing the state.
To bolster security measures in Plateau State, the police chief disclosed that a tactical unit would also be deployed. Emphasizing the seriousness of the initiative, IGP Egbetokun, along with senior police officials, visited Plateau State to underscore the commitment of law enforcement to tackle the security challenges.
Special Operation as Nucleus for Intervention Squad
The Inspector General of Police announced that the special operation commencing in Plateau State would serve as the nucleus for the broader Special Intervention Squad. This initiative aligns with the IGP’s earlier commitment to establish such squads in ten pilot states across Nigeria.
IGP Egbetokun appealed for the collaboration of the people of Plateau State in the collective fight against criminals. Stressing the need for everyone’s contribution, he declared the security situation a war that requires the active participation of the community. The IGP urged citizens to provide information and support to the security agencies.
Highlighting the nature of the conflict, IGP Egbetokun emphasized that the fight against insecurity should not be construed as a war against any particular tribe or ethnicity. He urged the people of Plateau to unite against the common enemy – the criminals responsible for the attacks.
The Inspector General of Police visited Plateau State to assess the security situation, especially in areas recently affected by attacks. The move comes in the wake of a Christmas Eve assault in Bokkos and surrounding areas, which claimed over 190 lives, injured many, and led to widespread destruction of property.
