A petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, resulted in a devastating tragedy on Wednesday morning, claiming the lives of over 90 people and leaving 50 others hospitalized.
The explosion occurred around 12:30 AM when the tanker, traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control near Khadija University, Majiya.
According to Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Adam, the tragedy was triggered when residents rushed to scoop petrol from the overturned tanker.
“The residents were collecting fuel from the overturned tanker when it exploded, igniting a massive fire that killed 94 people on the spot,” DSP Adam explained.
Another 50 people sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for treatment.
Authorities began a mass burial for the victims on Wednesday morning as the community mourned the loss.
DSP Adam described the event as a “horrific tragedy” and stressed the importance of educating the public about the dangers of scooping fuel from accident scenes.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, AT Abdullahi, expressed his deep condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire state, saying, “This is a heartbreaking moment for us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families.”
He also urged the public to be aware of the dangers of petrol explosions and to report such incidents to the authorities immediately. “Safety must be our priority,” Abdullahi emphasized.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, with many frantically trying to save the injured amidst the flames. Sani Umar, a resident who narrowly escaped, recalled, “It was terrifying. People were running everywhere, screaming for help. The fire spread so fast that many couldn’t get away in time.”
