Peter Obi rules out merger with PDP, NNPP ahead of 2027 elections

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, has clarified that no merger deal has been reached with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political group.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday morning, the former governor of Anambra State emphasized that discussions regarding alliances remain inconclusive. He called on patriotic Nigerians across the political spectrum to unite in 2027 to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of mismanaging the country’s resources.

Obi expressed deep concern over the nation’s worsening security challenges, describing the persistent issues of banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings as tragic and avoidable. He lamented the alarming rate of corruption, highlighting excessive government spending and the sharp rise in public debt under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Criticizing the current government, Obi accused officials of misusing public funds through frequent and unnecessary foreign trips in 2024, which he described as a deliberate act of financial recklessness.

In the 2023 presidential race, Bola Tinubu of the APC secured victory in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states, amassing 8,794,726 votes—nearly two million more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who garnered 6,984,520 votes. Obi, running for the presidency for the first time, achieved an unprecedented third-place finish with 6,101,533 votes, while NNPP candidate and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, claimed victory in his home state with 1,496,687 votes.
