A Jeju Air passenger plane carrying 181 people caught fire on the ground early Sunday morning in South Korea.
The incident occurred in Muan, which is around 290 kilometres from Seoul, the country’s capital city.
The airliner was recognised as a 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 aeroplane returning from Bangkok, Thailand, with two Thai people aboard.
Officials say that 124 people have been confirmed deceased, with the death toll anticipated to grow.
The jet skidded off the runway before colliding with a concrete fence after its front landing gear allegedly failed to deploy.
Among the deceased are 57 women, 54 men, and others whose genders were not immediately determined.
Rescue workers are still looking for bodies sprawled throughout the airport, as dense, black smoke rises from the debris.
According to Lee Jeong-hyeon, chief of the Muan Fire Station, the plane was fully destroyed, with only the tail assembly visible among the wreckage.
The episode occurred during South Korea’s political crisis, which saw parliament impeach the president and acting president within two weeks.
