The Super Falcons of Nigeria have an opportunity to revive their Olympic campaign this Friday when they face the World Champions, Spain, in their second group stage match.
The Falcons suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Brazil on Thursday in a tightly contested game.
Despite creating numerous chances, the Nigerian team couldn’t find the back of the net. Brazil’s sole goal came from Gabby Nunes in the 37th minute, who managed to evade the offside trap and score with a powerful shot.
This match was symbolic as it marked Nigeria’s return to the Olympic stage after a 16-year hiatus.
Spain, on the other hand, began their debut campaign with a strong performance, coming from behind to beat Japan 2-1.
Playmaker Aitana Bonmatí scored once and assisted on another goal to secure the win for Spain.
With this victory, Spain leads Group C with three points, level on points with second-placed Brazil. Japan and Nigeria both remain without points, occupying the bottom two spots in the group.
