During a plenary session held on Tuesday, the Ogun State House of Assembly has officially ratified the impeachment of its former speaker, Olakunle Oluomo. All 22 members present at the session voted in favor of the impeachment.*

The plenary, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Bolanle Ajayi (APC-Yewa South), saw Musefiu Lamidi (APC-Ado Odo Ota 11) presenting the report of the committee established on Monday to investigate allegations brought against the former speaker.*

Lamidi emphasized that the committee’s objective was to ensure a fair hearing on the allegations, rejecting claims of a witch-hunting mission. The former speaker, in response to the committee’s inquiries on Monday, expressed objections, arguing that certain committee members, having signed the impeachment notice, were unfit to be part of the investigative process.*

“Having observed that the committee turned down his request, he walked out on the committee to avoid responding to further questions,” Lamidi explained. “The committee observed that the attitude of the speaker shows that he has no regard for the committee and by extension the House of Assembly.

The committee, based on its findings, concluded that Oluomo was guilty of financial impropriety, high-handedness, and lack of focus, among other charges. Consequently, they recommended his impeachment.

Lamidi moved the motion for the adoption of the report, which was seconded by Oluseun Adesanya (PDP-Ijebu Nort-East). The resolution was then put to the house, and the 22 members in attendance affirmed the removal of Oluomo as the speaker through a majority vote.

“With the majority vote of 22 members, I hereby confirm that Oluomo stands impeached and removed as the Ogun House of Assembly speaker,” declared the deputy speaker.

Adegoke Adeyanju (APC-Yewa North 1) subsequently nominated Oludaisi Elemide (APC-Odeda) as the new speaker, a motion seconded by Adeniran Ademola (APC-Sagamu11). Elemide took the Oath of Office and was officially sworn in to replace the impeached Speaker.
