OAU VC orders investigation as lion kills varsity staff

Tragedy struck on Monday at the Zoological Garden of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, when a nine-year-old male lion fatally attacked Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a Veterinary Technologist who had been in charge of the Zoological Garden for over a decade.

According to a statement released by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, Mr. Olawuyi was attacked while feeding the wild animals in their den. Despite efforts by other staff members to rescue him, the lion inflicted severe injuries on the victim.

Following the incident, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, conducted an on-the-spot assessment and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and underlying causes of the tragedy.

The statement further mentioned that despite immediate medical attention, Mr. Olawuyi succumbed to his injuries.

Since the occurrence, the management, staff, students and the entire University community have been thrown into mourning following the the death of the Veterinary Technologist.

In response to the attack, the aggressive lion was promptly euthanized.

Mr. Olawuyi had been caring for the lions since their birth on campus approximately nine years ago, making the tragic turn of events even more distressing.

“The University management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life,” the statement added.
