As rallies against the removal of petrol subsidy gain momentum nationwide, protesters have managed to bring down the gates at the entrance of the national assembly.
Today, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) initiated these protests in response to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to end the subsidy regime, which has caused considerable hardship.
When the protesters arrived at the national assembly complex on Wednesday, they found the gates locked by security officials.
Undeterred, the protesters resorted to pulling down the gate while chanting solidarity songs to gain entry into the complex.
Currently, the protesters have assembled on the national assembly premises, while vigilant security personnel observe the situation.
President Tinubu announced the end of the petrol subsidy regime during his inaugural address on May 29.
This decision promptly resulted in a surge in petrol prices, quadrupled transportation costs in some regions, and escalated inflation across various market segments.
In an attempt to mitigate the impact on the masses, President Tinubu outlined palliatives during a nationwide broadcast on Monday.
Despite these measures, talks between federal government representatives and organized labor to find a middle ground have reached an impasse.
