The Nigeria Labour Congress has scheduled a nationwide strike to begin on August 2, 2023.
Though a court order prohibiting the congress from striking in June remains in effect, PUNCH learned that the congress has scheduled a nationwide strike.
The congress expressed its concern and refusal to remain inactive while Nigerians face the hardships resulting from the removal of subsidies, acknowledging the severe consequences of this decision on the people.
Tinubu’s administration had taken them to court earlier this month to prevent a nationwide strike following the initial removal of the subsidy on petrol.
Although the government established a committee to communicate with organised labour, representatives of the Trade Union Congress and the NLC claimed that the committee had not successfully initiated a dialogue with labour.
Speaking with PUNCH, the national treasurer of the NLC, Hakeem Ambali, said, “Yes. We issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to conclude all negotiations with labour or face industrial action yesterday by the Central Working Committee.”
Earlier on Tuesday, an NLC official informed The PUNCH that the congress would meet to discuss the next steps.
If the government fails to meet the ultimatum, a nationwide strike will ensue.
As of now, the national president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, has not made an official statement or responded to inquiries.
Another national official mentioned that the public would be informed about other plans soon.
