The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has applauded the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for its recent decision to unbundle the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer Science program. The new structure introduces four distinct specializations: Artificial Intelligence, Network & Cloud Computing, Software & Web Development, and Cybersecurity & Data Protection.

Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director of NITDA, described this move as a game-changer in Nigeria’s IT sector, marking a seismic shift in preparing graduates for the digital revolution. Abdullahi emphasized the importance of this development in positioning polytechnics as key players in nurturing individuals with skills crucial for addressing challenges and capitalizing on opportunities in emerging technologies.

NITDA sees this decision as a significant step towards promoting IT sector growth and enhancing the capabilities of the nation’s workforce. The move addresses identified skills gaps outlined in the IT Skills Gap Assessment, conducted in collaboration with CC Hub, which highlighted 12 in-demand IT skills both nationally and globally.

Abdullahi recognized the potential of Artificial Intelligence, Network and Cloud Computing, Software and Web Development, and Cybersecurity and Data Protection in shaping the future of Nigeria’s IT sector. NITDA has established the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI) to nurture talent and equip individuals with the necessary skills for success in the digital age.

The Director General of NITDA emphasized the importance of collaboration between educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to ensure the successful implementation of these specialized fields. He extended gratitude to the National Board for Technical Education for its vision and commitment to advancing technical education in Nigeria.

Abdullahi urged educational institutions to proactively incorporate elements of digital literacy into their curricula, emphasizing the adoption of the National Digital Literacy Framework (NDLF) to keep the Nigerian educational system at the forefront of technological innovation.
