The Niger State House of Assembly is set to introduce a groundbreaking law providing a six-month maternity leave for nursing mothers in the state. Deputy Speaker Afiniki Dauda announced this during a recent training session in Minna on etiquette, protocol, security, and empowerment for female political officeholders.
The proposed bill aims to afford women the necessary rest after childbirth, contributing to both mother and child’s overall health and well-being. Dauda emphasized that the extended maternity leave would enable working-class nursing mothers to fully recover their energy and establish a strong bond with their children.
The training session, organized by the wife of the Niger State governor, Fatima Bago, focused on enhancing women’s participation in governance. It also aimed to equip them with essential business and life skills, preparing them for their roles as political officeholders and spouses of elected and appointed officials.
The event, a follow-up to a similar one organized by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in Abuja, emphasized the importance of a modest lifestyle and cautioned against extravagant behavior. Resource persons addressed issues related to gender-based violence, etiquette, security, and the general conduct of women, promoting values that safeguard their integrity and safety, as well as that of their spouses.
