Niger junta dissolves local councils

The head of Niger’s military government, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has ordered the dissolution of all local councils and appointed an army officer to lead the capital, according to state media reports.

Following last July’s coup, which ousted the elected president, General Tiani signed an order dismantling municipal and regional councils, which were last elected in 2020, as reported by Tele Sahel.

The report did not explain the dissolution of the councils. Additionally, a second decree announced by state radio appointed military, police, and public officials to take charge of local authorities.

Oumarou Dogari, the former mayor of Niamey, has been replaced by an army colonel.
