NERC fines AEDC N200m for tariff violations , orders refund

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed a ₦200 million fine on the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) for breaching tariff regulations. In a recent press release, NERC stated that AEDC failed to adhere to the prescribed customer band classifications outlined in the April 2024 Multi-Year Tariff Order.

A thorough review and customer feedback discovered that AEDC applied the new tariff across all customer bands, contrary to the Order’s provisions aimed at ensuring fair billing practices.

As a result, NERC has directed AEDC to reimburse customers in Bands B, C, D, and E who were billed above the allowed categories/tariff bands specified in the Order, provide the balance of customer tokens owed to affected customers at the applicable rates, with reimbursements to be completed by April 11, 2024, pay a ₦200 million fine for the blatant breach of NERC’s directives and submit evidence of compliance with the directives to NERC by April 12, 2024.
