The national assembly’s clerk, Kamoru Ogunlana, reports that the two houses have postponed their start dates by one week.
Senators and House of Representatives members began their latest break on March 27 and were scheduled to return to legislative work on April 29.
Ogunlana said on Monday that plenary in both houses will resume on May 6.
The clerk stated that the earlier resuming date has been postponed to allow lawmakers to participate in the Workers’ Day event and attend to constituency affairs.
“I am directed to inform distinguished senators, honourable members, and the general public that the two houses of the national assembly have extended the date for the resumption of plenary sessions from Tuesday, 29th April 2025, to Tuesday, 6th May 2025,” the statement reads.
“This extension allows distinguished senators and honourable members to participate in the Workers’ Day ceremony and attend to other engagements in their constituencies.
“Distinguished senators, honourable members, and the general public are invited to take note of the new resumption date.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.”
In his Easter message on Sunday, Opeyemi Bamidele, leader of the senate, said the national assembly is developing legal frameworks to establish state police as part of efforts to address insecurity in the country.
“While the Authority of the National Assembly is in the process of developing legal frameworks for the establishment of state police as one of the measures to address insecurity in the country, we urge security agencies to work together as a team to track and apprehend all the masterminds and sponsors of terror attacks nationwide,” he said.
