Military confirms IPOB attack on troops in Abia

The military has confirmed an attack on its troops by terrorists from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Abia State on Thursday. The surprise assault at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area resulted in the deaths of five military personnel.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the attack occurred while troops of Operation Udoka were deployed to enforce peace and protect citizens in the area. The terrorists, arriving in three-tinted Toyota Prado SUVs and other vehicles, launched the assault from built-up areas surrounding the checkpoint.

In the crossfire that ensued, six civilians were also killed. The military is currently investigating the incident and has vowed a brutal retaliation against the perpetrators.

“Troops of Operation Udoka deployed at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area were attacked and killed by IPOB/ESN terrorists. The troops, there to enforce peace and protect citizens, were ambushed by terrorists in tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and other vehicles. Sadly, five military personnel were killed in the attack,” Major General Buba stated.

He emphasized that the loss of any soldier is a terrible blow to the armed forces. The military mourns the deaths and is committed to responding fiercely to ensure the defeat of the terrorists.

“The lifeline of the terrorist is the people, and winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible. IPOB capitalized on this to perpetrate attacks on our troops. It is imperative that the military retaliate against this act. Our response will be fierce, bringing overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat,” he added.

The attack occurred as IPOB/ESN enforced a sit-at-home order across the southeast. The military’s response aims to restore peace and security in the affected areas.
