Liberia heads for presidential run-off election

Liberia is heading for a second round of voting in the presidential election between incumbent George Weah and opponent Joseph Boakai.

The provisional results show a close race, with Boakai having 43.70 per cent of the votes and Weah with 43.65 per cent.

As neither candidate is set to secure an absolute majority, a runoff election is planned for two weeks after the official results are announced.

This, however, may be delayed due to potential appeals.

This election is significant for Liberia, as it marks the first vote since the United Nations ended its peacekeeping mission in 2018.

It follows two devastating civil wars between 1989 and 2003.

The election has been commended for its peaceful organization and high participation rate by regional bloc ECOWAS and the African Union.
